API SN Plus is a supplemental oil category from the American Petroleum Institute (API). The oil formulations for API SN Plus are specifically designed to help prevent LSPI in TGDI engines. API SN Plus represents an improvement on API SN, an oil category developed in 2010.

WHAT IS LOW-SPEED PRE-IGNITION (LSPI)?

LSPI is an event that happens in the combustion chamber of TGDI engines at low speeds and high loads. The fuel/air mixture spontaneously combusts prematurely before spark timing, causing a “super-knock” in the combustion cylinder. If left unchecked, this event can cause damage to engine parts and potentially catastrophic engine failure in severe cases. Since 25% of new cars in the United States have TGDI engines, this is an issue that needs to be addressed.

HOW CAN LSPI PROBLEMS BE SOLVED?

Unfortunately, there is not one root cause of LSPI, but research indicates that the lubricants used can play a role in combating this issue. Calcium-containing additives are strongly associated with LSPI, therefore a fundamental change in additive technology can mitigate LSPI. API SN PLUS is only the first step in this battle with LSPI, with more formulary changes to be addressed with the upcoming ILSAC GF-6 category.

WHICH NORTH AMERICAN LUBRICANTS’ PRODUCTS MEET API SN PLUS?

NAL has reformulated to meet the new API SN Plus specs. The following NAL products claim the new API SN Plus specification.
