About Lesson

Antifreeze/Coolant plays a vital role in maintaining the health and longevity of a vehicle’s engine. By preventing freezing, regulating temperature, protecting against corrosion, and providing lubrication, these fluids help ensure the engine operates efficiently and reliably under a variety of conditions. Regular maintenance, including checking and replacing antifreeze/coolant as needed, is essential for optimal engine performance and longevity.

Antifreeze/Coolant

Antifreeze/Coolant is a solution typically made of water and ethylene glycol or propylene glycol, along with various additives. Its primary function is to prevent the engine’s cooling system from freezing in cold temperatures. Without antifreeze/coolant, the water in the cooling system could freeze, causing significant damage to the engine and other components. Antifreeze/coolant lowers the freezing point of the water, allowing the engine to operate smoothly even in extremely cold conditions. In addition to preventing freezing, it also serves to regulate the engine’s temperature by dissipating heat generated during combustion. It circulates through the engine and absorbs heat, which is then carried away to the radiator, where it’s cooled down before returning to the engine. Antifreeze/coolant helps maintain the engine at an optimal operating temperature, preventing overheating, which can lead to engine damage or failure.

What else does Antifreeze/Coolant do?

Corrosion Protection: Antifreeze/coolant contains corrosion inhibitors that help protect the various metals and materials within the engine’s cooling system from corrosion and rust. Corrosion can cause leaks, blockages, and other problems that compromise the effectiveness of the cooling system and lead to engine damage over time. The corrosion inhibitors in antifreeze and coolant help extend the lifespan of the engine and cooling system components.

Lubrication: Some types of antifreeze/coolant also include lubricating properties, which help reduce friction and wear on the water pump and other moving parts within the cooling system. Proper lubrication ensures smooth operation and prolongs the life of these components.
